Inseparably linked: the Stadium ‘An der Alten Försterei’ and Union Berlin

Union Berlin is a football club rich in tradition. Since its foundation in 1906, the club has established its own, unique football culture: terraces, direct passion and unadulterated football – to be understood, Union has to be experienced. At the place where Oberschöneweide football tradition put down roots in Köpenick soil in the early part of the last century. At the place where for decades the club’s supporters have felt at home. At the place where Union’s heart fervently beats – at the Stadium An der Alten Försterei.

In 2008, a stadium operating company, „An der Alten Försterei“ Stadionbetriebsgesellschaft mbH & Co KG, was set up as a subsidiary of the club (i.e. of 1. FC Union Berlin e.V.). Four businesses, Röfa, Hinze Stahl, VierC and Koch Automobil AG, became partners in the operating company and took on the interim funding of the stadium’s modernisation, which included upgrading and adding a roof to the terraces, comprehensive remodelling of the entrance areas, setting up new catering facilities and installing new seats to comply with German Football League (DFL) requirements.

Upon completion of that section of the construction work, the company, acting as a service provider to the football club, took over the operation and marketing of the stadium. The club was thus able to concentrate on its pressing duties – cementing the position of the men’s first team in professional football and continually bringing on young players in the youth development centre. The further development of the stadium complex fell into the operating company’s area of responsibility.
